Doctoral of Business Administration

  1. INTRODUCTION
  2. The National University of Management is committed to improving the quality of management for the twenty-first century by advancing knowledge through applied research and creating a stimulating teaching-learning environment. The DBA degree program normally requires three years of intensive study beyond the master's degree. Since the NUM-DBA program focuses on developing competent scholars, heavy emphasis is placed on the development of both teaching and researching skills. In addition, all doctoral students are required to demonstrate competence in scholarly research. Students are expected to work closely with faculty members whose interests are similar to their own. The NUM-DBA Program seeks to educate future management researchers and teachers who:

    • Generate new knowledge to advance understanding of their major fields: Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, and International Business.
    • Improve management practice by teaching excellence and creating innovative educational strategies.
    • Develop an increased appreciation of scholarly research and writing within individual doctoral students.
    • Work across disciplines to solve complex problems of modern management.
  3. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
  4. To meet the NUM-DBA Program, the student must hold a Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA or equivalent) from a recognition university and have a master's degree grade of at least B+. For those students who hold a master's degree other than MBA, and have never exposed to the following courses in: accounting, finance, marketing, management, and international business; the remedial courses need to be satisfied before they are admitted into the Program. Students are required to submit evidence of proficiency in the use of English language. Three letters of recommendation are required as part of the application procedure.

  5. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DBA DEGREE
  6. The student's program must satisfy the following requirements of NUM-DBA degree program:

    • Three years of work beyond the master's degree, with two years of course work and one year of dissertation research.
    • Completion of a minimum of 84 credits (48 credits of course work and 36 credits of dissertation research) with a minimum grade of B+.
    • The student is required to take a series of core courses, which are designed to provide an introduction to theories and approaches relevant for advanced courses and to lay basis foundations for subsequent dissertation research. The basic core courses are: research methods, statistics for management, economics foundations for management, organizational theory and behavior, business decision methods, and financial management.
    • The student is expected to master the literature and techniques in a major area of business administration, to be prepared to write an acceptable dissertation, and performance research of high quality.
    • The student must pass two written examination: core course examination and major area of concentration examination with a minimum grade of B+.
    • The student must complete a dissertation. The dissertation must show mastery of the literature and techniques, be written in creditable literary form, and represent a contribution to knowledge in the area of study.
    • The student must successfully defend the completed dissertation in a public oral examination.
