The National University of Management (NUM) was founded in 1983 as the Economic Science Institute (ESI), and received assistance from the National Economics University of Hanoi, Vietnam until 1991. With the opening up of Cambodia to the international community during early 1990s, the ESI was renamed to the Faculty of Business (FOB), which supported by Asia Foundation and then USAID (1994-1997). In 1998, the FOB was transformed into the National Institute of Management (NIM), and from 2004, the NIM was renamed into the National University of Management (NUM).

The first Graduate Program at the National University of Management was created since 1999 under cooperation with the University Utara Malaysia (UUM), which is a State sponsored university located in Northern Malaysia. The program was conducted in English in specialization of Business Management. From 2003, the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) was officially established by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. The main purpose of creating the School of Graduate Studies is to response the increasing demand of labor markets in regional and global competitions. The School of Graduate Studies operated Master and Doctoral Degree Programs. Until 2018, more than eight thousand graduates have successfully completed from the SGS’s programs and they’ve been working as government officers, non-government officers, company managers, and entrepreneurs in the Cambodia society. The School of Graduate Studies, currently offer various majors to meet the need of labor markets such as Management, Finance, Economics, Marketing, Accounting, Tourism, International Business, Public Administration, Public Policy, Business Law, and Information Technology, Management of Technology, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and Environmental Management. The SGS has also been providing the degree of Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) as well as Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Every year, around thousand students are enrolments in every major of the Graduate Programs at the SGS.
